The advantage of IEC61850 standard is that it standardizes the communication behavior and related system requirements between various electronic devices in substation, and makes the management more convenient.

The power system is generally widely distributed, and the distance from the power plant to the user is about tens to hundreds of kilometers. In order to manage and monitor these scattered power equipment, the traditional methods (such as telephone contact) are no longer applicable, and the remote technology must be used to transmit control signals and data. The remote communication technology can be achieved through IEC61850 communication protocol. IEC61850, with the characteristics of interoperability, free configuration, stability, openness and integrity, has become the first choice for China Power Grid Corporation to build digital substation and smart grid.

In order to solve the problem that the equipment produced by different manufacturers are not compatible with each other, the fundamental way is to use IEC61850 standard. However, some manufacturers do not have the R & D strength, and the equipment communication function can not meet the IEC61850 modeling specification. But if we want to put the equipment into the intelligent power station, we need IEC61850 protocol converter to realize it.

 Protocol converter generally needs to realize the conversion of communication interface and communication protocol. Protocol converter needs to connect with different devices, so communication interface must match them. The protocol converter needs a network port to connect with the monitoring computer, and a RS232 or RS485 port to connect with the device. If you want to connect more devices, the protocol converter needs to configure more interfaces.
